Various PSP Facts and FAQs

What is the PSP?

The PlayStation Portable (officially abbreviated as PSP) is a handheld game console released and manufactured by Sony Computer Entertainment. The system was released in Japan on December 12, 2004, the United States and Canada on March 24, 2005 and in Europe and Australia on September 1, 2005. The PlayStation Portable offers the ability to play video games, watch videos, listen to music, view images, as well as Internet browsing functionality.

The PSP, or PlayStation Portable, is Sony Computer Entertainment's debut entry into the portable gaming market, and potential competitor to Nintendo's long-running Game Boy franchise of handheld systems. The PSP system is the first truly integrated portable entertainment system designed to handle multiple applications – music, video, photo, Internet, and wireless connectivity, with games as its key feature. The PSP system features an unmatched library of entertainment
content – games, feature films, TV programs, and videos on UMD from major studios and record labels, as well as downloadable content from the Internet. The PSP system plays disc-based (UMD) videogames, and also has the capacity to play digital video and audio, as well as make use of other technologies via its USB 2.0 interface and Memory Stick port. Its wireless capabilities will allow free nearby Link Play as well as distance online play with a proper wireless network available.

Games

There have been new releases of downloadable PlayStation games via emulation for the PlayStation Portable. Currently, this feature is only accessible through a service for PlayStation 3.

Despite its movie and music playback capabilities, the PlayStation Portable has primarily gaming-oriented controls (as opposed to the controls typical to television remotes or MP3 players): two shoulder buttons, the PlayStation face buttons (triangle, circle, cross, square), start and select buttons, a digital 4-directional pad, and an analog stick. There is also a row of secondary controls along the underside of the screen, for controlling volume, music settings (either switching the audio off and on in games or selecting different equalizer presets), screen brightness, and a "Home" button for accessing the system's main menu.

The PlayStation Portable's analog stick, often referred to as the analog "nub", is a circular disc which slides rather than tilts. The analog stick can also be easily removed and replaced with an alternative third party stick.

Movies & Video

Watch full-length, feature movies and TV shows -- over 430 UMD™ movies and TV shows available including Napoleon Dynamite, The Family Guy, Lords of Dogtown, Benchwarmers and the Dave Chappelle show. Or watch videos saved to your Memory Stick Duo™.

The PSP offers reasonable video and audio bit-rate settings (a resolution of 320×240, a video bit rate of 500 Kb per second, and an audio sampling rate of 22050 kHz) a 22 minute video file is roughly 55 MB, enough to fit on a Memory Stick Duo as small as a 64 MB. At the same rate, a hundred-minute feature film can fit on a 256 MB Memory Stick. Many movie files, both free-to-distribute and copyrighted, have been encoded for the PlayStation Portable and are available on the Internet.

Photos

Digital Images: Carry your favorite pictures with you wherever you go, it supports several image formats, including: JPEG, .TIFF, .PNG, .GIF, and .BMP, and has a slideshow option which can be played at 3 different speeds.

Music

Enjoy your favorite music whenever, wherever you’d like! It’s easy to save and play your favorite MP3s.

Network

With Wi-Fi functionality you can go online with your PSP® or communicate directly with other PSP® systems. Play games online, browse the web and more. The Playstation Portable holds the unique distinction of being the first game console to launch with games supporting online gameplay.

Ad-hoc wireless networking allows for up to 16 PlayStation Portables within range to communicate directly to each other (typically for multiplayer gaming). One unit acts as the host for a game, which is available to other PlayStation Portable units within that system's range, and appears in a list when the client PlayStation Portable searches for available hosts. One can also use an Ad-Hoc network to send images from one PlayStation Portable to another by use of the "send" and "receive" functions that appear in the "PHOTO" menu.

The PlayStation Portable's main menu allows the user to configure the system for use across the Internet or an intranet via a wireless connection, known as infrastructure mode. The PlayStation Portable's menu can recognize protected and non-protected wireless networks within its range, and supports connecting to WEP and WPA encrypted networks.
Some titles for the PlayStation Portable support a feature dubbed "gamesharing", which facilitates a limited set of multiplayer features between two PlayStation Portables with only one copy of the game UMD. A reduced version of the game being shared is transferred to the PlayStation Portable without a UMD via the PlayStation Portable's Wi-Fi connection, whereupon it is loaded into RAM and runs.

Such "gameshare versions" of titles usually have their feature set reduced because of technical limitations. This is mainly due to transfer times since data for the game must be transferred to the second PlayStation Portable wirelessly, at a rate of 11 megabits per second. Also, since the game data is stored in the PlayStation Portable's RAM, there is a storage limit of 32 MB.

The PlayStation Portable's main microprocessor is a multifunction device that includes a MIPS R4000-based CPU, hardware for multimedia decoding (such as H.264), as well as a vector unit dubbed "Virtual Mobile Engine". The MIPS CPU core is globally clocked between 1 and 333 MHz (as shown above). During the 2005 GDC, Sony revealed that it had capped the PlayStation Portable's CPU clock speed at 222 MHz for licensed software. Its reasons for doing so are unknown, but are the subject of some speculation. Various homebrew tools enable users to operate at 333 MHz, generally leading to a higher framerate at the expense of battery life.

The system has 32 MiB main RAM and 4 MiB embedded DRAM. There is no memory management unit for the CPU. No evidence of a TLB has been found. The coprocessor that normally manages the TLB-based MMU seems to be a custom effort by Sony and has no integrated memory.

The 166 MHz graphics chip has 2 MiB embedded memory and through its 512 bit interface provides hardware polygon and NURBS rendering, hardware directional lighting, clipping, environment projection and texture mapping, texture compression and tessellation, fogging, alpha blending, depth and stencil tests, vertex blending for morphing effects, and dithering, all in 16 or 24 bit colour. The graphics chip also handles image output. Specifications state that the PlayStation Portable is capable of rendering 33 million flat-shaded polygons per second, with a 664 million pixel per second fill rate.

Battery Life

PlayStation Portable's battery life varies widely depending on application from less than 3 hours while accessing a wireless network and having screen brightness on its highest setting to more than 10 hours during MP3 playback with the screen turned off. A sleep mode is also available that uses minimal battery power to keep the system's RAM active, allowing for "instant on" functionality.

Sony Computer Entertainment has made measurements of the PSP's abilities, based on technical standards and in-game performance of work-in-progress games. On October 27, 2004, the company announced that the typical battery life for the PSP will be between 4 and 6 hours for games, with 4-5 hours for video viewing. These numbers, according to SCE, were determined with the system's luminance set to maximum (180 cd/m2) and minimum (80 cd/m2), volume set to half the maximum level, headphones used instead of speakers and wireless LAN not in use. Hands-on battery tests with the PlayStation Portable have yielded results in accordance of SCE's specs -- between 3 and 6 hours of play, depending on brightness, volume, and other factors, with WiFi play running between 2:30 and 4 hours. Each individual game will affect the PSP run-time in its own way due to complexity of gameplay, technology, loading requirements, and other factors. SCE works with all developers in QA format checking and also at other steps in development to ensure that each team reaches an optimal and acceptible battery life for a particular game.

SCE has described its 1,800mAh battery to be able to power the unit for as long as typical battery-based portable electronics, which would include portable DVD and MP3 players as well as other game systems. At E3 2004 in May, SCE estimated the PSP's battery life to run between 2 1/2 and 10 hours. The PSP's various CPUs are scalable, and usage of the UMD disc drive may depend between different types of games and game engines.

Interface

The PlayStation Portable's main menu interface is the "Cross Media Bar" (XMB) used by recent Sony TVs, the PSX (DVR) hardware, and the PS3. It consists of a horizontal sequence of icons, in this case Settings, Photo, Music, Video, Games, and Network, which show a vertical sequence of sub-icons when highlighted.
The main menu system allows the user to, amongst other things, adjust settings such as date, time, and the PlayStation Portable's nickname for wireless networking, play video or audio files from the memory stick, load games or movie UMDs, check on estimated battery life, and set the PlayStation Portable into a "link mode" which makes the inserted memory stick available to a PC via USB. The XMB may be accessed at any time in a game by pressing the "Home" button on the console.

Firmware

Each PlayStation Portable runs a particular version of the PSP firmware, which comprises the device's operating system and additional core functionality. Firmware updates can be obtained in three ways:

      1. Direct download to the PSP over Wi-Fi. This can be performed by choosing "Settings", "Network Update" from the XMB.

·      2. Download to a PC, then transfer to the PSP via a USB cable or Memory Stick.

·      3. Included on the UMD of some games. These games may not run with earlier firmware than the version on their UMD.

While firmware updates can be used with consoles from any region, Sony recommends only downloading firmware updates released for the region corresponding to the system's place of purchase. Firmware updates have added various features including a web browser, Adobe flash support, additional codecs for images, audio, and video, PlayStation 3 connectivity, as well as security against several security exploits and vulnerabilities. The current firmware version is 3.03.

Have the specifications changed since the system was originally announced?

Yes. Changes and improvements were made from the originally announced PSP specifications, released July 29, 2003. The most specific change was that its memory allotment was bumped up from 8MB to 32MB (which also includes 4MB of embedded DRAM and 2MB of VRAM.) A number of other changes have also been made to the operating system and design. And because the original specs were intended for developers and publishers ready to create titles, while the E3 2004 specs were intended for public disclosure and investor relations, a large number of technical details were omitted from the original 2003 specs for ease of read. Many of the final technical aspects are known to still be accurate to this original announcement (and were most recently confirmed to be accurate at Sony's Hot Chips 16 PSP presentation), but current technical details have not been publicly released, and specifics may have been altered for the final PSP.
For comparison's sake, below are the original specifications for the PSP:

For the layperson, exactly how powerful is the PSP?

For those not able to understand the techno mumbo-jumbo spelled out in the PSP specs, what it all boils down to is that the PSP has a whole lot of power, portable system or otherwise. At GDC 2004 in April of 2004, Christ Charla (of the development outfits Digital Eclipse and now Backbone Entertainment) said at the handheld's tech demonstration unveiling conference: "Polygon for polygon, PSP has more power than PS2 ... A huge number of effects that are given to you in software on PS2 are available in hardware on PSP." And all indications at the E3 unveiling were that the system would indeed meet those lofty heights -- the preliminary box for Gran Turismo 4 Mobile stats that the game quality, "...is not at all inferior to its PS2 counterpart."

While most familiar with the hardware say it would still be unfair to put the typical PSP and a PS2 or current-generation console game side-by-side in a professional test and expect the two to match up or favor the handheld version in technology terms, the advanced graphics processor technology of the PSP used to draw just enough to fill the pocket-sized screen means that PSP games will have more than enough power to create the kinds of vast 3D worlds, humanistic characters and cinematic effects that today's advanced games require.

What kind of disc are PSP games available on?

The PSP uses a proprietary Sony disc called the UMD, or Universal Media Disc. Capable of storing up to 1.8GB of data (a CD holds 0.650GB, a DVD holds 4.7GB), the UMD is a disc format enclosed in a small cartridge (similar to the Sony Mini-Disc format.) It is an optical medium enabling game software, full-motion video and other forms of digital entertainment content such as movies and music, to be stored. The newly developed UMD is the next-generation compact storage media and at only 60mm in diameter.

Are PSP discs writeable or rewriteable?

No, the UMD cannot be written to. Only Sony will be able to create UMD media -- the company has no plans to make external UMD writers devices, and even third-party publishers will not be able to create their own discs without Sony's ability to press the data to UMD.

What does the PSP use for memory storage without a writeable disc?

The PSP makes use of Sony's Memory Stick format, small rewriteable Flash ROM cards about the size of a stick of bubble-gum. This format will mostly be used for the same uses as the Memory Card for PlayStation and PlayStation 2: game character and progress saves, user-created data, online downloaded content, and system profiles and hardware drivers. The Memory Stick media will also be used to store separate audio and video files for those who use the handheld's additional multimedia features. The specific Memory Stick format to be supported by PSP is the Memory Stick PRO Duo format, which also makes it compatible with the standard Memory Stick Duo format.

Can I watch television on my PSP?

Not without an additional accessory. Sony has not announced a TV Tuner adapter. Third Parties have expressed interest in creating a PSP TV Tuner (as well as radio play and other features), and at least one such unit has been announced for release in Asia, but no accessory has been release yet. However, you will be able to watch UMD movies and MPEG4 AVC videos recorded on UMD Video discs or on a Memory Stick Duo accessory.

Our Top Pick ! - Awesome Site!
The Good: This one is easy... AllPSPGames rocks, it dominates the PSP downloads market with its awesome service. Download anything you want (not "just" games - as the name might imply): AllPSPGames offers a huge selection of full UMD games, DVD quality movies, CD quality songs, themes, software and more... I was personally, very impressed with the members area, it is very user friendly and has many valuable features included in it. We examined hundreds of PSP downloads websites and I am telling you, AllPSPGames is by far the best PSP downloads website out there. With the membership you receive a handy program for transferring video content (including DVD movies) from your PC to your PSP and a handful of easy-to-follow tutorials. Unlike our 3rd pick (PSPBlender) AllPSPGames has a VIP-First-Class technical support! The download speeds are superb and with no time or bandwidth limits, you can really download anything you want, any time you want it...
Another important thing to say here is that AllPSPGames's databases are updated all the time.

The Bad: What's really missing in AllPSPGames is a pre-membership search field, for some reason none of the PSP downloads sites have that option, we also think AllPSPGames could have done better with their tutorials, FAQ page and should add a games cheats section. Other than that we can't find any thing else bad with this website.

The Bottom Line: AllPSPGames is by far the best PSP downloads website. True, there are some things it can do better, but after comparing it to all the other PSP downloads websites we examined (and we examined A LOT) we can confidentially say that AllPSPGames is the #1 PSP downloads site, offering much more than ("just") PSP games download (look at the features area).

The Good: Well, as you can see from looking at the score analysis, we are talking about an excellent site here... It has excellent download speed for a very wide selection (20 million files on the network). PSPWizard offers a live 24/7 tech support but it depends on who you get to talk with... PSPWizard is part of a very big company - you can find many of their PSP downloads websites when you search the net, but let me tell you - PSPWizard is beyond doubt their best service. PSPWizard's average file quality is very high (9.2). Like AllPSPGames, PSPWizard supplies you with a DVD to PSP software which can make your life much easier and help you enjoy this great service.
Unlike its' home page, PSPWizard's members area is very neat, well organized and user friendly.

The Bad: Although PSPWizard is a great website, just take a quick look at the drop in the rating between AllPSPGames to PSPWizard... This is mainly due to AllPSPGames's supreme service that makes all others look bad... PSPWizard offers much less files to download, their tech support is a bit lacking and the average media quality (although very high) is relatively low compared to AllPSPGames. PSPWizard could also make their FAQ much better and enhance their home page a lot... The home page navigation is very poor and doesn't disclose much information.

The Bottom Line: PSPWizard is an excellent website and has definitely one of the best PSP downloads services on the net, it belongs to a big & respectable company, has a 24/7 tech support and an overall big selection of high quality PSP files. After saying all that, we must add that although it is an excellent website, we found a (much) better one for your PSP Downloads needs - as presented above...
"Buying games is always a gamble. I can't afford to buy games every day! With your service, I can try games out without having to spend too much money!"

The Good: PSPBlender has a very attractive look with a very well organized and comprehensive home page: the navigation bar allows you to easily view all the different sections; the site can be translated to seven different languages making it accessible to non-english users. The FAQ section of PSPBlender is really informative, and well designed. PSPBlender offers a no bandwidth / time limit downloads and has a good (8.4) average file quality.
Another good thing about PSPBlender's is the bundeled video conversion software (PSP X Studio).

The Bad: While you might find PSPBlender very attractive and promising you need to remember that "judging a book by its cover" is a wrong thing to do ...
The truth behind PSPBlender is honestly quite gloom, the site simply doesn't live up to what it claims to have and supply. The files sources and download speed are somewhat limited (compared to the sites above).
As you can see from the score analysis, PSPBlender's tech support is practically non-existent, time and time again we were unsuccessful in contacting them.

The Bottom Line: PSPBlender is an overall good site considering the PSP Downloads sites market but it clearly falls short of the sites reviewed above. The real downside is PSPBlender's lack of tech support, having said that, PSPBlender proved to be a recommended site but there are without a doubt better sites for you to use - as shown above.
Features:
"With your PSP Blender Membership you receive instant access to millions of files ready to be transferred to your PSP. This includes but is not limited to movies, television shows, video games, music, and PSP software."
